You Such a Dirty Bad Girl... Beep Beep! uh, uh!

There's an ad on Craigslist announcing Bunim-Murray Productions, creators of MTV’s The Real World is casting for the reality show that "brings seven self-proclaimed 'bad girls' together in a beautiful mansion."

Fame and fortune, here I come!  Please accept my submission for the Bad Girls Club below:

A brief BIO telling us what makes you a “Bad Girl”

Oh man, where do I start?  Well, for starters, I can par-tay.  Nick and I were at a wedding this past weekend, and I burned up the dance floor to "the Twist" "Let's Twist Again" and "I Saw Her Standing There."  And despite the fact that my dogs were barking, I even tried to learn the Dougie (in heels!)

Currently I am wearing black socks, even though my pants are navy blue.  I've also been known to wear white after Labor Day.  (Shut up, right?!)

I'm a librarian, but my bookshelf is arranged by binding color.

If I fart in a public place, I look around as if searching for someone else to blame.

Despite the fact that it's indisputably the most important meal of the day, occasionally I'll skip breakfast.

Attach several photos

My humor isn't for the weak at heart

I am clearly wearing Bling

Not afraid to ruin an otherwise great photo

Former saxophone player.  The flute was just too "safe" for me.

Bad-ass ride.

In sum, I think I would make an excellent addition to The Bad Girls Club.  MTV HMU!  (That's Hit Me Up for those of you not up on your street slang.)

My Television Debut! (Not Counting the Time I was on the Jumbotron at Conte Forum)

Last Wednesday, fellow Team Eye & Ear member Dr. Dean Cestari (check out his inspirational fundraising page for HONORS here) and I met with WBZ-TV's reporter, Peg Rusconi to discuss running and caffeine. Peg and her cameraman were very nice and asked us a bunch of questions related to whether or not we drink coffee (or other caffeinated beverages) while training. I had never been interviewed for television before, and was definitely not used to being filmed.

Peg & I smiling despite the fact that it was about 30 degrees outside!

Peg wanted to get some shots of us drinking coffee, and it was hard for me to keep a straight face while sipping from the cup and sort of staring into the distance while the cameraman was about 1 foot to my left. He had to gently remind me a couple of times to "just look straight ahead" because I kept glancing at him out of the corner of my eye while drinking...

More on my Favorite Subject... Me.

I've been tagged many times on Facebook to write 25 Random Things about myself. I held out on participating for awhile, but gave in while eating my lunch today. I cheated a little though, since I'm posting to Blogger and not Facebook...
  1. As soon as I saw my husband walk through the restaurant's door on our first date, I knew we'd get married.
  2. We met on Match.com.
  3. No, we're not in a commercial.
  4. People accuse me of being nosy, and I am; however, I am an excellent sleuth and have complete confidence in my research abilities.
  5. I used to drink a lot of Coke in college, but wanted to cut down on my sugar intake. I switched to Polar Seltzer & am completely addicted. I drink 2-3 cans a day.
  6. I allow myself one coffee (medium iced hazelnut with skim, no sugar from Dunkin Donuts) per day.
  7. I am the moron you see holding an iced coffee on my walk to work in -10 degree weather.
  8. I make half a box of spaghetti for myself and finish it. I don't believe that 1 box is supposed to feed more than 2 people...
  9. I prefer salty to sweet.
  10. I only eat hot dogs at ball parks. They taste better there.
  11. I don't understand people who don't make at least a small effort to stay physically fit.
  12. When my husband & I have a house someday, I want to have floor to ceiling bookcases in at least one of the rooms.
  13. I can recite Spaceballs & Pee-Wee's Big Adventure word-for-word with the characters.
  14. I regret not spending a semester abroad, and tell anyone who will listen that they should not make the same mistake I did.
  15. The Dunkin Donuts I go to in the mornings plays the best music. I imagine the customers and staff breaking out into elaborately choreographed numbers when a particularly good song comes on. Especially when "Like a Prayer" is on.
  16. I love writing song lyrics and jingles.
  17. I torture my husband by singing them non-stop. He's especially tortured by a song I wrote dedicated to my love of sandwiches.
  18. I am a terrible singer and dancer.
  19. I love to sing and dance.
  20. But usually it's when I'm cleaning the house or cooking and can't embarrass myself.
  21. I will always sing karaoke though. (And embarrass myself.)
  22. I love my family.
  23. You aren't supposed to like your in-laws, but I love them and wished they lived closer.
  24. I love my friends.
  25. I am raising money for Mass Eye & Ear. If everyone who reads this donates a dollar, I'll have a couple hundred bucks! Please donate $1! You can do so here: www.firstgiving.com/got2trotlibrarian

Wax On, Wax Off

In order to prevent them from taking over my face, my eyebrows require the time, skill & patience that Mr. Miyagi invested in his bonsai trees. It's come up once or twice on this blog that I need to have my eyebrows waxed approximately every 12-14 days. When I was able to track down my girl Natalie, I breathed a heavy sigh of relief. She does such a good job, that I frequently get complimented on their shape. When was the last time you noticed someone's eyebrows? You can't remember, right? That's how good she is.
Of course, fashion and style are completely subjective, and I know that there are lots of women out there that wouldn't be caught dead in my beloved cargo pants (just like I wouldn't be caught dead in their fug ankle boots.)

Robin Hood called, he wants his boots back

There are approximately 3 different nails salons that I'll pop into if I need a quick (I'm talking 10 minute) manicure. One is close to my office in Downtown Crossing, another is close to Natalie in the South End and, the other is about 2 blocks from me in Southie. All 3 salons are inexpensive ($11 for a manicure) and quite good. They are also each run by Vietnamese men and women who think I am the hairiest woman in Boston. On separate occasions while I was getting my nails done, and in each of the locations, they have asked me if I also wanted an eyebrow wax. Last night, when after I washed my hands and before my technician started to apply the polish, I asked for the slip so I could pay. As I reached for the slip, she pulled it back and asked, "Maybe you should get an eyebrow wax too?"

"Oh, just the nails today!" I sang, as I watched her expression fall in disbelief and pity. Then she said something to the woman next to her that probably translated into, "Swamp girl doesn't want to trim down those brow bushes" and they shared a hearty chuckle. At least she didn't ask me if I wanted my chin waxed again.

All the Better to See You With

I've worn glasses since I was three years old, and thus, perhaps destined to be a librarian. My astigmatism is bad enough to prevent me from being able to wear soft contact lenses, so when I do wear contacts they're gas permeable. Unfortunately, gas perms aren't really suited for long term daily wear, so it's glasses by day and contacts by night.
Boy, Bacardi must have had me in mind during this ad campaign...
I don't particularly mind wearing my glasses; in a way, they allow people to remember your face better. I've worked at numerous counter-style breakfast places, and it was always easier to assign a memory device to customers wearing glasses. I'd see the tall woman with red frames and know to get her a toasted everything with hummus on the side.
Of course, some people wear frames that are easier to remember than others. My current ones are black with a lime green tint around the edges, and fall into the "easier to remember" category. I grossly overestimated my flexible spending account this year, so I have the luxury of getting a "free" pair of glasses before July. Shopping for glasses is a time-consuming process, because unlike a shirt that looks fantastic in the dressing room and hideous at home in natural light, glasses can't be returned and you need to wear them. I definitely don't want to be reminded of an impulse buy every time I look in the mirror, so I take a long time to make a decision.
For about a month now I have been trying on frames at different stores in the city, but I haven't found anything memorable. Last Friday, I went to Eyes Over Copley and tried on several frames there. I love Eyes Over Copley because they give you honest feedback and have a great selection of frames. Plus, it's always nice to support a local independent store versus a larger national chain. One pair really stuck with me and so on Saturday I went back and ordered my new frames. They should be in hand within a week or 2, and I'm looking forward to throwing off my co-workers and lunch counter staff with my new look.

Big Day for the Blog!

One of my entries about the adventures of eating a durian was added to Universal Hub's blog this afternoon. You can check it out here. The same entry was also linked on Boston.com.

Keep scrolling... a little bit more... you'll see it...

Since I seem to be getting a lot more hits than I normally would, I'd like to ask visitors to consider making a donation to my marathon charity, the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. You can make a donation via the First Giving widget on the right, or if you'd like to peruse my team members' First Giving sites, you can do so here. There are about 60 of us on "Team Eye & Ear" and we're raising money for one of the best hospitals in the United States. Thank you for your support!
